What's different about Apple?

No, I am not paid to write this hub. Yes, I like Apple products but I have not reached the Apple-Geek stage. I own a MacBook Air and use HTC Desire and I love both of them. To be honest, I used to be an anti-Apple. Their products seem to be out of reach for me most of the times. I guess half of the world hates Apple while the other half loves it dearly. And I was surrounded with the hates, I guess! How many times have you heard that Apple is too expensive? Countless.

Tablets

Anything that begins with ‘i’ is almost a trademark to Apple. iPad revolutionise the way we do things. I agree but not all. Tablets have been around with us for ages. I have seen businessmen folding their supposedly laptop screen on top of the keyboard and started writing on the screen using a stylus. So, what’s different about iPad?

Old tablets run on computer operating system while iPad uses mobile phone operating system. It makes things look simpler and faster. The best that people can come with something small and affordable is netbook which still runs on computer operating system.

iPad announced and everyone follows. Mobile operating system on netbook, tablets, MP4 players, and even surround sound systems. ChromeOS and MeeGo are still early in their development stage. iOS is already stable as it is used in iPod and iPhone. Apple is smart in a way that they only have to develop and maintain just one operating system and it can be used for three or more different devices.

Take a look at Windows. They are always a step behind. Windows 7 is great on computer and tablets while Windows Phone 7 is reportedly great too. However, both Windows 7 and Windows Phone 7 are completely different platform. Rumours are that Windows 8 is going to be compatible for all platforms. I can’t wait to see it.

Okay, I am contradicting with my own words as Apple has MacOSX and it’s different from iOS. But here comes my next point.

The Market

Apple only has to develop firmware and software for their systems. They never have to worry the ‘ifs’ and the ‘buts’. To be clear, what if this doesn’t work for Motorola or Nokia, what if this doesn’t work for AMD processors, or Asus motherboard or what if this doesn’t’ work on Samsung netbook?

Apple only has to focus on specific hardware and that’s contributed the stability of Mac OS X. There are also nothing like Mac OS X Snow Leopard Ultimate, Home, Premium and the likes. So for this, I believe that we are grateful that Microsoft has tried to cater everyone all along but still, some people blame Windows operating system for crashing and not saving their work. Even Windows Phone 7 has to cater for different mobile phone manufacturers like HTC, Samsung and now Nokia.

MacBook and iPhone

Please can you find laptops and mobile phone that are about the same specification as MacBook and iPhone but around the same price? I doubt you can as I have tried before purchasing my MacBook Air. I have said over and over again to my friends and in some forums. Sony VAIO Z series is the lightest Sony laptop. It’s not slimmer than MacBook Air and yes, it is a powerful machine. But take a look at the price. Lenovo U260 is cheaper and again, it’s not slimmer than MacBook Air and it doesn’t have SSD hard drive as default.

My HTC Desire costs me about £350 while an iPhone is £510. I love my HTC Desire which is why I am still holding on it. The thing I really dislike is the problem with multi-touch when playing games. Therefore, I can only play less exciting games. The limited internal memory space has also limited the phone’s capability in storing apps and games. These are the things that can be done using iPhone as well as other HTC phones that are around the £510 price tag.

Finally…

You get what you paid for, simple as that. Apple products look more exclusive because they are almost like self-contained. When you mention Android, you think about HTC, Samsung, LG and so on. When you mention, Windows, you think about netbook, Asus, Samsung, Acer, Sony and the likes. When you mention Apple, you only think Apple. Therefore, it’s different.

Thanks Prasetio, you might well be considering buying them in the future because eventually, you will need a new laptop or pc or mobile phone even. Have a nice weekend!

Great information. I agree with your last comment. In the future, you will need to purchase one or the other. You have written a hub that is so very well written and full of information that I will remember when I do need to buy again and you have already helped me make the perfect decision. Thanks!

Nicely written. It is Apple's exclusive nature that makes some people love it and some hate it. They make great products, that's for sure, but I do appreciate being able to mix and match my hardware and software.

myi4u 11 months ago

Glad to be able to help you neakin! Thank you for the compliments!

You are right jponiato, for some techies, they still prefer start things from scratch. However, seeing that Mac OS X is turning to Intel processor, there are lots of people out there actually installing Mac OS X on a PC. I have tried that on my Samsung Netbook once. It was speedy but occasionally it crashed. Other users with different specs have better luck than me though.

Thanks for this hub It helps me to understand what is so great about Apple.

Excellent analysis! I enjoyed reading it.

IMHO:

Apple exists because of Microsoft. They are the anti-Microsoft, the Boutique Microsoft, the hoity-toity alternative for people who don't understand computers but still want to use them as useful tools.

Jobs is no more noble or existential than any other big-time computer company CEO: he stole cool concepts and ideas from Xerox just like so many other companies did.

No problem Susie Duzy! Great to see you here!

Hi nicomp, I think I heard that before. If I remember correctly too, Bill was from IBM originally. Anyway, history is there to be rewritten. A lot of people are wondering if we could ever have someone like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. Apple was going down very quickly when Steve Jobs left the company a few decades ago. When they begged him back, Apple never looks back since.

Most of the time, it seems to me that the imitator is more successful than the innovator.

Great hub. My best friend has an apple computer and it just blows my mind how advanced it is. They are nothing like Microsoft PCs. Another great write up myi4u!

myi4u 11 months ago

Thanks rorshak sobchak! It's always nice to try something different. I've been a mixed PC and Linux user for almost 20 years now and Mac is quite different but in a good way!

KMattox 10 months ago

Hey myi4u

Great hub! Great pictures too! I love apple, I just can't afford one. Until I can I'll keep plodding away on my Linux box, I'm not crazy about mICROSOFT either! I voted Up and Funny!

myi4u 10 months ago

Thanks KMattox! Linux is good too. By the way, the new Mac OS X Lion is out today and I am quite excited to get my hands on it. However, I need to fork out £20.99 for the upgrade which I think it's considered cheap when compared to Windows!
