Let The Right One In - Why I dislike the movie!

Over the years, there are tons of movie remakes introduced. The ones that I anticipated and they are still fresh in my memory are The Departure and My Sassy Girl. I didn’t finish watching them both. While most remakes are incomparable to the original, some do make it to the grade and pass with flying colours. Let Me In is one of those movies and it definitely better than Let the Right One In. On second thought, Rec (Spanish 2007) and Quarantine (English 2008) are both equally impressive!

Lots of reviewers were saying the Let Me In is the remake therefore Let the Right One In is the best among the two. Personally, I don’t regard Let Me In as the remake. It is the English version of Let the Right One In instead. To me, remake is something that movie makers do to improve the original titles with today's technology. Such that the original titles would be at least a decade old. Bear in mind that Let the Right One In was released in 2008 while Let Me In in 2010.

The Acting

I believe most of the problems with Let the Right One In lie in the acting. Eli is supposed to be a girl who has gone through many 12 years. Yet she still acts exactly like a 12-year-old. When her allegedly boyfriend makes preparation before going out to hunt, it looks as though he is preparing to go for a picnic. When Oskar finds out that Eli is actually a vampire, he doesn’t look surprise or afraid of her. Everything just looks flat and that’s the flow of whole movie.

The bullies don’t look mean at all. In fact, they are quite cute-looking boys and they haven’t done anything quite nasty except towards the end of the movie.

The Sequence

Let the Right One In has got the scripting sequence terribly wrong. Right at the beginning of the film when Eli (the vampire) and Oskar (the boy) met, Eli says that they cannot be friends while they are still in the middle of a conversation. While watching the movie, it seems as though Eli can't wait the tell Oskar that they can’t be friends.

At one point, Eli points out that one of her possessions has the equal value of a nuclear plant! How hilarious! Most of the sentences that come one after the other don't make a lot of sense.

The Plot

The settings and plots don’t suggest Let the Right One In as a horror movie nor a romance movie. The first kill seen in the movie is done by Eli’s allegedly boyfriend. Why would anyone choose to kill and hang his victim upside down in a brightly lit park? I don't think I have ever seen a horror film that is so brightly lit throughout.

Finally…

It just goes to show that the end results of a movie with the same story can easily be separated by the execution of the crew members behind. Let Me In surpasses Let The Right One In by miles. Let Me In brings the story to life with horror and romance yet Let The Right One In is just flat throughout.

I apologise if my review sounds a bit too harsh. I thought I was a bit biased when I wrote Let Me In review but after watching Let the Right One In, I am happy to say that I did not.

I have Let The Right One In in my Netflix queue - might have to pass on it. After all, I have dozens of movies queued up, so no shortage of things to watch.

Thanks for commenting jponiato! So, have you watched Let Me In? I think this is the first time where I come across that many mixed reviews regarding the original and the "remake". Anyway, I still wonder why so many people like Let the Right One In so much. Maybe I should watch it again some other time.

Based on your last review I watched "Let Me In" and you were spot on. I will therefore not be getting "Let the Right One In". Thank you.

BTW have you watched "The Others" with Nicole Kidman or "The Sixth Sense" with Bruce Willis? Now in my opinion they are brilliant movies and maybe you might consider writing their reviews. I have also written a hub recommending the most inspirational family movies. I'd love to hear your opinion on my choices.

Yeah... I watched The Others and The Sixth Sense before and they are really good. I believe that The Sixth Sense has caught everyone by surprise in the end. In regards of writing reviews for both the movies, I might have to skip though. It's been years since I watched them and I can hardly remember half of the movie. But I thought The Sixth Sense's little boy was good in acting. Especially lots of people are still making fun of one of his line, "I see dead people"!

Funnily, I have only ever watched a horror movie at the cinema which is A Tale of Two Sisters (Korean). I almost screamed a few times and I jumped from my seat a couple of times too!

I was born in KL and lived in Malaysia for the first 5 years of my life. I used to often stay in Penang with my Uncle and Auntie. She was of Chinese descent and he Tamil. She would tell me ghost stories every night and it took me ages to sleep I was so terrified. I didn't see it as a bad thing I would look forward to her stories but few movies scare and I only jump if I get a surprise.

The best Korean Movie I watched was called two brothers which I found very moving. It was long and subtitled but what an emotional roller coaster!

Wow... you must have travelled for most part of your life then? I was born in Johor, and worked in KL for about 6 years before coming to UK. Now, I try to go back like once a year. So, are you looking forward to moving again? Do you still go back to Malaysia?

Thank you for this honest review, I'll remember not to watch this movie. Sounds like crap to me! Great write-up though. I'll have to read more of your movie reviews in the future to keep myself informed. :) Voted up and useful.

haha... thanks kittythedreamer! You might still want to watch this movie because there are actually quite a lot of people loving it, which I don't really understand why!

Yes, I have spent a lot of my life travelling though I haven't been back to Malaysia in 27 years. I would love to go back again at least once before I pass away. I don't have any plans to move soon as I feel settled here. But who knows!
